Implementing Level of Detail (LOD) Architectures in WebGL

Dynamically adjusting geometric complexity based on camera distance to maintain high frame rates across large architectural and CAD scenes.

Rendering hundreds of high-poly 3D assets simultaneously strains GPU geometry pipelines. Implementing Level of Detail (LOD) switches detailed meshes with simplified geometry as objects recede from the camera viewport.

1. Discrete LOD Switching Strategies

Discrete LOD maintains multiple pre-simplified mesh representations per object. Based on view-space distance or screen-coverage percentage, the rendering engine toggles geometry visibility dynamically.

2. Screen-Space Hysteresis & Popping Elimination

Abrupt mesh swapping causes visual popping. Introducing distance threshold hysteresis and cross-fading opacity in fragment shaders hides level transitions smoothly during camera movement.

3. Quadtree Spatial Indexing for Terrain & Cities

Partitioning massive CAD maps or terrain surfaces using spatial Quadtrees allows loading low-detail root tiles globally while streaming high-resolution child chunks only near the camera focus.
